A Childhood Memory

The song, “Silver Bells” takes me back to my childhood days. Many different artists sang the song, but I remember Bing Crosby the most. He was one of my grandmother’s favorite singers. I remember seeing his show on our black and white television in the nineteen- sixties.

During the Christmas season, my grandmother took my sister and I shopping in town. We did not have a car, so we rode the bus everywhere we went.

We shopped at Five and Dime, Kresge’s, and a store called Jupiter. They were small department stores on Main Street. Their prices were affordable and that was good because our budget was lean.

All the stores displayed decorated trees and bright colors shone through the shop windows.  Bells rang outside the stores where the Salvation Army ringers stood hoping for donations for those in need.

Santa had a small house where we visited to tell him what we would like him to bring us. It was a magical time every year and a wonderful childhood memory.
