Stop! Is That Important?

I was so distracted about selling enough hot-dogs at the fundraiser that I forgot the other ways of ministry that are much more important. Many people sat on the bench while eating their sandwiches. They listened to the hymns we sang and shared stories of their lives; many of them needed much prayer.

As Jesus entered a small village, he was greeted by a woman named Martha who welcomed Him into her home for a meal. During the preparations for the meal, Mary, Martha’s sister, left from helping her and sat at the feet of Jesus.

Martha, overwhelmed by all the work, asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her. Jesus gently informed her that she was worried about many things. Mary had chosen the better thing and that was to take the time to listen to the Creator of the World.

How many times are we overwhelmed by things that are not that important? While sitting on the bench, I heard the hearts of those who were extremely lonely. Many shared concerns about addiction and broken families. Others just needed someone to listen and feel their pain from the loss of a loved one. Our time, that we give others, is priceless. We may never know what kind of impact we may make by giving time, unselfishly, to those who need us. When we find ourselves overwhelmed by many things that we think need to be done, stop and look for what is most important.
