On my morning walk, a few months ago, I heard a friendly voice, “Come, sit, and have a cup of coffee”. I looked up and saw a woman sitting on her porch. “I can’t today,” I replied. “I have to hurry back. My husband and I have plans for the day.” Even though I was weary from my walk and could have used refreshment and a short rest, I continued on my way.
Jesus bids us, “Come! Come if you are weary, come if you are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” I wonder how many times Jesus has said to me and to you, “come”? Are we too busy in our daily lives to hear the bidding of the Bridegroom, the One who knows us better than we know ourselves? Have we let the noise of the world drown Him out? Have we taken up idols that are more important than sitting a while with the Savior, the One who can give us that living water to quench our tired and thirsty souls?
It is easy to shut out God’s voice. We allow the world to dominate our every moment. We often sit in front of the television, computer or cell-phone for hours oblivious to all else. I believe Jesus is calling out to each one of us. Our time on earth is short and He is knocking on our hearts’ doors wanting us to open them. Jesus is the Way, the only way to heaven. He calls us because He loves us and wants us to come into the family of God by opening our hearts to Him.
I did not stop to enjoy a cup of coffee with a neighbor and I should have. I know that God uses so many things in life to get our attention. He may have used this neighbor to speak an important word to me but; I will never know. Jesus says to you and me, “take time for Me. Come! my door is open”.
