You know this, my beloved brothers and sisters. Now everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. (James 1:19 NASB)
I have not always been a good listener. I would flare up before I really knew what the person was trying to say. It only caused drama, and I did not need that. I had to consciously work on my listening skills. As I practiced this, I became more knowledgeable. I was more at peace.
Each time I was tempted to speak before listening, I would put on the brakes. It was like learning to drive a car. You use the brakes before barreling through a stop sign and I had to do the same.
Be encouraged! If you are struggling with listening and over-reacting, ask God to help you. He will give you the strength and ability to listen before you speak, and peace will be yours.
